MeeGo 1.2 released

Intel headed MeeGo mobile operating system recently reached v1.2. MeeGo was initially had started off as a merger between Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin. It was designed to run in Intel and ARM architectures and was targeted to various devices; from mobile phones to in-vehicle entertainment. Its a Linux - based operating system and thus that makes it an open source project.

In February, Nokia choose to make Windows Phone as default operating system for its smart phone and backed off from this project. Not many had hoped MeeGo would survive since Nokia was a important part of the project. But Intel was firm to continue development and had its own plans.

Some highlights of the MeeGo Core stack ( Source : MeeGo blog ) include:
  • MeeGo Reference Kernels supporting a variety of Intel Atom and ARMv7 platforms.
  • QML Application Framework and extended Qt-Mobility APIs, including additional location, system, connectivity, and sensor/haptic capabilities for rapid, rich, application development.
  • Enhanced Telephony and Connectivity capabilities, including:
    • GSM, GPRS, and HSPA+ network support
    • SIM Application Toolkit
    • Expanded Bluetooth profiles
    • Expanded VPN and wireless authentication methods
    • USB, WiFi, and BT-PAN data tethering capability
    • Enhance multimedia support, including RTSP streaming with progressive download.

Nokia N9

Nokia still seems to be pretty interested in MeeGo since it recently launched in news saying its next MeeGo mobile device is going to be named N9, which is supposedly the successor of N900. A video of this was uploaded in youtube but was removed soon after because of some reason.
Development of the MeeGo 1.3 is on progress and is scheduled to release on October.
